Ellen C. Attkisson, 89, of Faribault, Minnesota, and formerly of Garysburg, N.C., passed away on February 4, 2010 at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home. Services will be Saturday, February 27 at 2:00 p.m. at Wrenn, Clarke & Hagen Funeral Home, 1015 W 5th St, Roanoke Rapids, N.C. followed by burial at Garysburg United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Bob Clyde of Lebanon United Methodist Church will be officiating. Visitation one hour prior to service at the funeral home.


Survived by daughter Len & Jim Nielsen; grandsons Harold & Tina Nielsen and Erik & Kassy Nielsen; great-grandchildren Anna, Max, and Chase Nielsen; brother John Cooke of Roanoke Rapids; sisters Barbara Hardison of Spring Hope, NC and Dorothy & Bill Baldwin of Hopewell, VA; and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by husband, James M. Attkisson Jr. and parents Clifton & Mary (Jordan) Cooke.


Alpha Ellen Cooke was born on May 29, 1920 in Garysburg, N.C. She graduated from Gaston High School and Mrs. Tilhman's Business School. Prior to her marriage she worked for the Northampton County Department of Social Services. She married James M. Attkisson on April 25, 1943. She and Jimmie lived in Garysburg until August 2000 when they moved to Minnesota to be near their daughter.


Ellen was a devoted member of Garysburg Methodist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, and was an active member of the United Methodist WomenÕs organization. Over the years she was a member of the Garysburg Extension Homemakers Club. She was memorial chair of the Northampton County Unit of the American Cancer Society. She delivered Meals on Wheels, and was on the Advisory Council to the Odom Unit of the NC Department of Correction. For many years she was secretary for T.G. (Sonny) JoynerÕs Peanut Business. Wherever there was a need, she was there with a helping hand and serving her neighbors and family. She truly went about doing good and sowing seeds of kindness.


Memorials preferred to the Garysburg United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or First English Lutheran Church Office Equipment Fund.
